History of Onsted

The very first known Onsted in the area was Peter, who arrived in 1855 and an settled near the site of the present village on Onsted.

William Onsted in 1883 organized a “family community” in Southern Michigan which he called “The Onsted Community” after his father, John Onsted, because he was the first person to purchase land at the actual town’s site. Even so, it took the Michigan and Ohio railroad coming through to cause Onsted to incorporate as a village in 1907.
